So, what mountain bike is right for you? There is no one answer, but we can provide you with some guidance. The top two things to consider when choosing a mountain bike are:
1. Where do you plan to ride?
Mountain bike terrain varies from smooth dirt to rough rock gardens. What you need for a smooth single track will be very different from a bike designed to roll through rock gardens and plunge down the mountain at full speed. Do you need full suspension or hardtail? 26″ wheels or a 29er? This all depends on where you ride and the type of ride you want to experience.
2. What is your budget?
You can buy an entry level mountain bike, such as the 2012 Giant Boulder, for as little as $359.99, or custom build your dream machine anywhere between $2,500 – $7,000 using parts manufactured primarily in the USA. We ask the money question early on so that we will get you on the best bike for your budget, not so we can max out your credit!
As with most things, money buys you better technology. On a bike this often translates into weight. The more you spend, the less your bike will weigh, and the quality of components will increase.
